Labradorite Crystal Skulls

Labradorite captures light - when light shines into the stone, it is trapped among the crystal layers within, reflecting from one layer to the next. When the light exits the stone, its wavelength has slowed considerably. The thickness of the crystal layers within a particular piece of labradorite and the speed of the wave of light entering it determine what colors you will see. The base color of labradorite is usually a grayish black, with flashes of brilliant blue, green, yellow and pink. “Labradorescence” is the term jewelers and geologists have given this amazing phenomenon.

History & Lore:

The name labradorite comes from the province of Labrador in Canada, where it was found by missionaries in 1770 – some of the first stones were offered to the British Museum in 1777. There is evidence that Algonquian tribes of Maine had already been using this stone since perhaps as early as the year 1000, although what they used it for at that time is unknown. An Eskimo legend says that the Northern Lights were once imprisoned in the rocks along the coast of Labrador; when a wandering Eskimo warrior found them, he freed most of the lights with a mighty blow of his spear. However, some of the lights were still trapped within the stone, creating the beautiful peacock colors we find in Labradorite.
